Time for Change, Starts Now.

Well, I was hoping to hop on and give a very positive update to homeschool with AO. If you are keeping up with my posts, you will see that I shared two weeks ago that I have made some changes to make this curriculum more accessible for my daughter. I had high hopes, and thought the new layout would be what sparked her interest and we could get more work done each day.

I had to cut her slack since we had a sick week, and I did not push her really hard to power through.

I recently sat her down and ask her what she was enjoying this year. She likes math, and she enjoys the history book Our Island Story, Little Pilgrim's Progress, and nature study. This made me look at what books we had selected for Y2 and really think about what we could realistically accomplish. I have now purchased something completely different for reading, writing, and composition. It is called Lightening Lit, and I came across another homeschool family who uses it. The post was sharing what changes they had made for this school year.

This mom was praising this reading program which utilizes reading classic children's picture and chapter books. Each week you read the book, and then do the corresponding grammar or writing lessons.

I think the heavy work load for Ambleside which required copy work, narration, recitation, picture study, music study, Shakespeare, and so much more was daunting for her and I. Trying to also homeschool my kindergartener took away from time with my second grader. We were rushing to complete these readings, and she would mumble some narration my way and run from the room. If we just now focus our attention to bible readings, which are a nonnegotiable for me, math and reading. Science and history will fall into place with the other core topics.

My goal as always, is to ensure that I am giving my girls a solid education. If that means I have to make pivots mid year, then I will do what I need to do. I already have library holds for the picture books needed, but the workbooks will not arrive for about a week. I will just continue reading the books she enjoys outloud and do some copy work with that. I do not mind listening to the music with them because it exposes them to new styles which we may not other wise hear.

I am praying that this new curriculum will be fun for her and I. She is growing in her ability to read outloud to me, and her sight words have really come a long way this term. These books will allow her to do more reading to me, and not me reading as much outloud to her. She did mention she gets bored and I cannot say I blame her. I will update in the upcoming weeks with this new change.

God Bless!
